WHat are we LEarning?
In the month of October we will continue to work with Realistic Fiction Stories. Students are working on identifying and understanding story elements in a text. In the second week of October we will start to read Argumentative Texts. We will work on the skill of identifying the authors point of view. Towards the end of the month students will be taking the Unit 1 assessment.
Each month your student is expected to meet their AR goal. I set the goals at the start of the month. Each students goal is unique to them, everyone is capable of reaching their goal each month.
For Math we will be focusing on Variables, Expressions and Properties, in Topic 2. In Topic 3 we will be learning about the different operations involving decimals. We will also start Topic 4 in October. In Topic 4 we will be focusing on solving equations.
Students will be completing their Personal Narratives in the first week of October. Our second paper of the year will be an argumentative paper. Students will choose a stance on a topic and share their opinion through an essay.
Students are given a grammar packet at the start of the week and are expected to have it completed by the end of the week.
Grammar tests are on Fridays.
This month in Science we will start looking at Space Science. Within the space science unit students will learn about the lunar cycle, eclipses, solar system arrangements and the planets.
At the start of the week your student should be brining home a spelling list. This list is for your student to keep at home. It is their responsibility to study their words at home. Students have time to complete their packet at school each week. In Google Classroom towards the beginning of the week I will post a spelling list. I also post a GIMKIT game that the students can play. GIMKIT is an online educational game system, that I use as a way to review in class.

In Social Studies we will be working with Chapters 3 and 4. Within these chapters we will learn about the early Dakota people here in Minnesota. We will also learn about the early Ojibwe people.
We are still working with current events throughout the month. I have changed how I incorporate current events, into the classroom. Once or twice a month on Fridays your student will complete a current event worksheet and present their findings to the class.
